MOMMY, MAMA, AND ME by Leslea Newman

This is part of a series spotlighting gay parents in children’s literature. Please visit Jonathan Arnston’s blog for more.

From Goodreads:
Rhythmic text and illustrations with universal appeal show a toddler spending the day with its mommies. From hide-and-seek to dress-up, then bath time and a kiss goodnight, there's no limit to what a loving family can do together.

My review:
I find it interesting that picture books that feature gay parents are far more prevalent than YA or MG novels. It’s as if the niche for babies and preschoolers suddenly disappears for older kids.

MOMMA, MAMA, AND ME is a board book. Few words, but they are rhythmic and poetic. Beautiful illustrations by Carol Thompson; Thompson and Newman are jointly responsible for a number of picture books.

A lovely before-bed book for any child about loving parents.

Great series. I never see these books anywhere.

Interesting observation, Kris, and here's one thought: Picture books are generally bought by adults (parents/teachers/librarians) concerned with diversity and kids' self-esteem. As children get older, they start making their own book-purchasing decisions, and they're simply interested in being entertained. So I think what gets published is a reflection of the audience publishers are selling to. If that makes sense.

I agree that it is an interesting observation! This sounds like a sweet picture book. :)

Hey, wow! I hate to be so sheltered, but this didn't really occur to me.

You know, parents are largely absent in much YA lit. (Remember Mary Kole's post on this?) With little kids, parents are everything...

But it's a very interesting question. I bet this starts to change. And I think that looks like a lovely book~ :o)
